Originally founded over 100 years ago, there are over 1200 homes in the Rosedale area occupied by single professionals, families, and even some of the original owners. There are a variety of businesses within walking distance, and much of the neighborhood activity centers around Ramsey Park with its swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, and renovated playscapes. The strong sense of community coupled with the convenience of an urban location make Rosedale a desirable Central Austin neighborhood. Originally used as farm and dairy land in the 1860s, it later became the home to florists and nurseries which planted flowers, trees, shrubs and other nursery stock, some of which remain in the neighborhood today. The area is named after the Rosedale Arbor Vitae which is supposed to be a cross between a Golden Arbor Vitae and a Japanese Cedar.
